Courage When You’re Wondering Where You’re Going

“That I may walk before God in the light of life.” – Psalm 56:13 NIV

here am I going?

It’s a question I pondered as I walked along a winding stretch of dirt road.

And it’s a question that has agonized the ages.

We’re anxious to “arrive” somewhere – anywhere, for it speaks of victory, meaning, and significance.

But not just any road will do.

Our Father calls us to the narrow road too few find. (Matthew 7:14)

He whispers in our ears, “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21)

Are we listening?

With each step I took on the dusty trail, the answer seemed clearer.

Where am I going?

Home to Jesus.

He is my destination.

And once I declared it, a fresh breeze of freedom brushed my face.

Can you feel it too?

He is the object of our Salvation, and The Point at the end of our life.

Our gift. Our promise.

While I walked, I understood more deeply that the journey – my journey, is my responsibility.

And that understanding makes the road feel smoother and my steps surer.

I’ve let go of the “arriving” rope I’ve been clinging to.

My thoughts have turned instead to doing my duty while this life lasts.

How?

Trust steps.

I want my journey to be made up of “trust steps”. Not trusting in myself, or another person, but trusting the Lord who never forsakes those who seek him. (Psalm 9:10)

I want trust steps that delight in Jesus.

When the path I was traveled changed course, I started to focus on each step I took – trusting God to see me through.

I stepped on curbs, stepped over bugs, and ducked my head as I walked under low-hanging trees.

I darted sprinklers, faced headwinds, and went around a swarm of bees.

I experienced wonderful beauty, too.  Rose bushes fat with blooms, the smell of jasmine heavy in the air, and cool breezes that let me travel a while longer.

The trek was hard, long, beautiful, and sometimes lonely.

But that’s alright, because the destination remains on Jesus.

“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

I will work to trust God with every step I take, for I know my journey, is my accounting, of my life.

What about you?

How will you go about the time that’s been given to you?

My advice?

Start. Go. And end with Jesus.

And I bet you’ll never wonder where you’re going.

May we all, “Walk before God in the light of life.” – (Psalm 56:13)

Thanks Raye…for some reason lately I’ve had anxiety about the journey I’m on.  Wondering where it will lead me…how will I get through it…when will this stormy road become calm.  You definitely made it clear to me.  I needed a reminder to enjoy where I am and know Jesus is my destination.  I will begin my “trust steps”!

    1. So glad today’s post helped Judy. Thanks so much for sharing your precious thoughts.

Awesome post. Reminds us to keep “working out” our salvation — it isn’t a destination, it’s what I do today, then every day after.

    1. You’re so right, “working out” our salvation is all on us. Thanks so much Katie!
